wrapping up

Starting to wrap-up my research. Overall, I feel bad bad teacher has good intentions to bring attention to a such serious issue and most users contributing to the community do, too. However, it is hard to make sure that everyone is using the site for the right reasons. Even though badbadteacher.com uses several modes of control (liability, filtering, and norms), some users still manage to break through and mock/take advantage of the site. Some people just enjoy making a joke out of serious issues, and there's really no way to avoid these people.

Looking toward the future for this site, I think it's just important that the Webmaster makes sure things within the site stay true to the overall goal of shedding light on a serious problem, rather than glorifying bad behavior. If comments from people not taking the site seriously get too out of hand, the future of the site could be jeopardized. In the future, the Webmaster may want to consider that users posting to the site set up personal accounts.

Updated Profile

Francisco Lindo's profile has just been updated. It's been reported that he was freed on $100,000 bond, but reportedly remains on paid suspension from Union City Schools.

However, as I've learned through my research about this site and as stated on the site's "About Page": "BadBadTeacher.com accepts no responsibility for the timeliness, accuracy, or value of any information provided by external sites to which we link." And since the Webmaster gets his information from elsewhere, this information isn't guaranteed accurate.
The Webmast replied in regards to my request to ask some users of Bad Bad Teacher about why they comment to the site, if they feel they're are getting out of it or making a difference on the issue at large. Although he said it was fine and I posted my questions, I've gotten no response thus far.

And no teachers posted again today.

I find this kind of interesting.....I just posted to my community to try and get some information from individuals who had recently posted about a newer case. In the site's comment tab it claims that: Reader comments submitted to BadBadTeacher.com may be held in a moderation queue awaiting administrator approval before being posted. The moderation queue is reviewed on a regular basis and comments are added to the system in as timely a manner as possible. During certain times, particularly late at night, reader submitted comments may remain in the moderation queue for a few hours. After all, we all have to sleep sometime…...

But when I actually made my post it immediately showed up on the site, and only said that it was awaiting moderation. I wouldn't say this is the greatest mode of control since many people could see this comment before the webmaster has a chance to take it down, and if it was a really harmful comment it could do a lot of damage before being removed.

Conclusion: filtering as a mode of control for this site is poor at best!

klou Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation.

I’ve just been doing some research on this site for a semester project. I was just wondering if you all know this teacher, or if not, what brought you to this site? What do you think your posts are accomplishing (will they help solve the case or is it just a way to speak out about the issue?)

No one new today

No one new today, but here's another guy from yesterday that I missed:

Jason Lyn Gasque, 31, a math teacher and coach at Speake High School in Danville, Alabama was arrested Wednesday morning on allegations that he inappropriately touched a female student.

Jason Lyn Gasque

Gasque is charged with first-degree sexual abuse, a Class C felony and is punishable by 1-10 years in prison if convicted.

Gasque is accused of having inappropriate contact with a 16-year-old female student twice in a two-month period. The alleged victim told investigators that the contact occurred after school on school grounds.

It is alleged that Gasque kept the student after school where he made advances toward her and touched her.

May 8 must be a crazy day for bad bad teachers....2 more accused:

David Paiva: 39, a former English teacher at Barrington Middle School in Barrington, Rhode Island has been arrested on allegations of the sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl. The 14-year-old daughter had received numerous inappropriate and disturbing e-mails and
text messages from Paiva, then a Barrington Middle School English teacher.

Jose Fanjul:
35, a language teacher at West High School in Salt Lake City, Utah has been arrested for allegedly having sexual relations with a 17-year-old female student. The girl claims she engaged in various sexual activities with Fanjul between March and July of 2008, both at his home and at the school.
Seriously...what is wrong with these people. I can see where the creator was going with the site to try and shed light on a problem as serious as this, but at the same time I'm not sure what posting these people to the internet is doing. I guess it's a good informant for parents to watch out for their kids while at school, but at the same time they're posting a lot of information that could be pretty detrimental to an individual's reputation in the future if they end up being proven innocent.

They just keep comin'

Bradley Dieffenbacher: 32, a former math teacher at M.S. 190Q in Forest Hills, Queens, New York has been charged with allegedly having inappropriate online relationships with eight of his 12 and 13-year-old male students. He had sexually explicit conversations with the boys via the internet, the he directed them to pornographic websites and that he used a webcam to watch one of the boys masturbate at Dieffenbacher’s command.

one more!

Allen Guerin: 28, a math teacher at Haines City High School in Haines City, Florida has been arrested on allegations of having sex with a, then 16-year-old, female student; he coached the girl's cross country team, too.

Today's Predators: May 8

Matthew Cepican: GUILTY; 33, a former history teacher at Rialto High School in Rialto, California; gets 120 days in county jail, three years probation and ordered to register as a sex offender after being accused of an inappropriate relationship with a 16-year-old female student in 2007

Robert Ashley: GUILTY; worked for the Albuquerque Public Schools and who has taught and/or substitute taught at Atrisco Elementary School and Kit Carson Elementary School has been arrested on allegations of secretly videotaping the legs of female elementary school students

Heath Miller: 34, a music teacher at Howell L. Watkins Middle School in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida has been arrested on allegations that he sexually assaulted four female students (between 14-16 yrs. old)

Two previously accused men were listed as guilty today....I'd consider this a good step towards the site's goal of addressing this serious problem. It's a big step toward enforcing a norm online (mode of control)

Thursday, May 7, 2009

So I just realized they added a new element to the site's notice at the top of the page today. Before it just read:

NOTICE: All individuals listed on this site are presumed innocent unless they have been found guilty in a court of law.

Today they added:

The BadBadTeacher.com notation appearing on graphics on this site is a WATERMARK and NOT an expression of fact or opinion.

Random thought today, but the advertisements on this site are extremely random and unrelated to the site......what does Target, Best Buy, or baby strollers have to do with teachers being accused of inappropriate behavior???
Predators of the day:
Arnold Sprague IV, 39, from Morganfield, Kentucky was accused of 26 accounts of sexual abuse
Geneva Henry, 29, a former English teacher at Jupiter Christian School in Jupiter, Florida has reportedly sent inappropriate messages to one of her male students on MySpace.
Marc Greenberg, 32, girls basketball coach at Chaminade-Julienne High School, a Catholic high school in Dayton, Ohio has been arrested on allegations that he engaged in graphic sexual conversations and sent obscene images to a New York law enforcement officer who posed as an underage girl.

They just keep coming!

3 new teachers today: Wayne Thompson who's 69 and accused of sexual relations with grade-school boys from the past (Ontario, Can.), Linda Nef who's a 46 year-old social studies teacher from Utah and a cheerleading advisor and is accused of a sexual relationship with a 13 year-old student, and 45 year-old Albert Scerbo who was a music teacher at the Onondaga Indian Nation School and was accused of sexual contact with 2 girls, 7 and 8 years-old. Sick! -----------------------------------> Albert

Hello!

So I finally got my digital hub up and running for my online community: badbadteacher.com. This site focuses on teachers accused of behaving badly. It's a bit disturbing as it's usually criminal behavior involved and there's usually a list of newly accused teachers everyday. In fact, every time I've entered the site there's newly accused teachers and past teachers being posted as guilty or non-guilty. Anyone can post to the site and it's not required to sign up or create a profile, you're simply instructed to follow the rules of the site and comment/post as you will. There's been some pretty heated conversations that have risen out of accusations, and I've discovered that they often become more personal than about the actual accused. Usually, the people commenting on certain teachers are from the local area and know kids that have/are attending the school where the teacher was from. Most round of comments about an accused teacher go back and forth from posters who support the teacher and posters who are against the accused (usually resulting in a back and forth battle). This site definitely qualifies as a public shaming site with a goal to reinforce norms. It was created to shed light on a problem that gets worse and worse by month and year. More to come as my studies continue!
